Our Reading Spine

“Great books build the imagination.” Pie Corbett

At Aughton Early Years Centre, we have developed a list of high quality books that will be shared with your children throughout their time with us to reflect our rich curriculum.

Regularly reading with children builds their vocabulary and imagination, and some of our core stories are repetitive and will be used in more depth to encourage independent recall. From these particular stories, we choose between 1 and 3 key words, appropriate to the age range, that are repeated during the text and teach children an action which matches the word. Children are encouraged to say the word and do the action as they hear the words being read. This makes the stories interactive and memorable so that children can retell them in their play. We will use Class Dojo to post videos of the relevant actions to enable parents/carers to support children at home.

Each of the selected books are well illustrated providing discussion points to encourage children’s understanding of vocabulary. It is as important to discuss the pictures and what is happening in them as much as drawing children’s attention to the printed word. After a while, the children will get to know each story word for word, which will give them great confidence as early readers in terms of fluency.

Please see a member of staff if you require any further guidance and support. Thank you.
