Broad Beans

In the spring children planted some broad bean seeds after reading the stories Jack and the Beanstalk.  All the children took their plants home and Iris sent some photos of her beans that she had successfully grown.

After caring for them and watering them regularly we harvested the beans on the last day of summer term.  Children picked the pods and opened them to find the big juicy beans inside.  Children enjoyed counting the pods and beans and compared sizes.  We then cooked them and ate them for snack.  Tha majority of the children had the confidence to taste them and many asked for another.

Harvesting the Potatoes!

We harvested the potatoes on Friday 21st June. We took the plants from the sacks they had been growing in and the children were so excited as they saw the potatoes peeking through the soil. There were lots of potatoes and everyone had a turn at digging them out and putting them into a bowl. We counted the potatoes that had grown in each sack, then we washed and cooked some of them and ate them for snack. Many of the children enjoyed them so much that they asked for another one! All the children took a small bag of potatoes to cook and eat at home.

Spring

One of the key texts in Pre-school this term has been 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. Children enjoyed the story and it promoted lots of discussion about growing and which elements plants need to grow tall and strong. We then went on to grow our own bean plants and children have been caring for them and showing an interest in watching them grow. We have also planted some seed potatoes so hopefully in the summer we will be able to harvest both the beans and potatoes and cook and eat them.

Enjoying baking for Easter!
